Forklift safety

Opener

We continuously strive to provide an environment free from all harm by promoting a positive safety culture, which puts our employees and customers at the center of everything we do.

Critical points

  • Forklifts are to be inspected before every shift.

  • Seat belts must be worn at all times.

  • Sound horn around blind corners and when you need to alert others.

  • Blades should be kept no higher than 6 to 8 inches from the ground.

  • Never drive forward if the load blocks your ability to see your path.

  • Pedestrians have the right of way.

Key points

  • No earphones or any type of hearing device allowed.

  • Cell phone use is strictly prohibited while operating a forklift.

  • No smoking on a forklift.

  • When carrying a load and operating on inclines and declines, the fork blades and load should always face the incline. Drive forward when going up the ramp / incline. Drive backward when going down a ramp / decline.

  • Know your surroundings at all times, make eye contact with pedestrians in your way, and communicate when needed.

  • Report any incidents to your supervisor as soon as they happen.

  • Obey 5 MPH rule.

  • Never operate a forklift in a manner that is against Freeman policy or if you, the operator, feel unsafe. Never drive forward if the load you are carrying blocks your ability to see where you are going. If this is not an option, use a spotter to guide you safely.

  • You are required to carry your forklift certification card on you while operating. If you do not have a card, you will not be allowed to operate.

  • Forklifts are to be inspected before every shift for working order and defects. Please mark any defects and notify supervisor.

  • Never leave a running forklift unattended.

  • When you park your forklift, make sure to use the parking brake and lower the fork blades. If you park on an incline, the wheels must be chocked.

  • Turn on your lights when operating a forklift. You are more easily seen by others with your lights on.

  • Never cover the protective cage with something that blocks or obstructs your ability to see your mast / blades as you raise your load.

  • Remember:  If you see something, say something.
