Ladder safety

Opener

We continuously strive to provide an environment free from all harm by promoting a positive safety culture, which puts our employees and customers at the center of everything we do.

Critical points

  • Ladders must be inspected prior to being used.

  • Choose the right ladder for the task / job you are performing.

  • Never use the top step or the second step from the top.

  • Keep 3 points of contact on the ladder at all times.

  • Find a ladder defect or damage? Tag it and take it out of service.

Key points

  • Ladders are involved in more injuries than any other piece of equipment we utilize.

  • Ladders must be inspected prior to being used. Check the rails, rungs (steps), locking arms, and feet for cracks, defects, bends, missing parts, or substances (oil) that could cause you to slip or lose footing.

  • The information labels, warning labels, and rating labels must be visible to the user. Do not paint over or remove the labels.

  • Keep 3 points of contact on the ladder at all times. If you can't do this, you should select a different tool like a scissor lift.

  • When using an extension ladder, it's a good idea to have a spotter at the base / feet of the ladder to ensure stability.

  • Never loan a Freeman ladder to non-Freeman personnel.

  • When you are done with the ladder, make sure to store it properly.

  • Falls from ladders are the number one cause of fatal injuries at work.

  • Never jump from ladders or other elevated locations.

  • Do not over-reach on ladders.

  • Remember: If you see something, say something.

Wrap up
