Lifting, pushing and pulling

Opener

We continuously strive to provide an environment free from all harm by promoting a positive safety culture, which puts our employees and customers at the center of everything we do.

Key points

  • Size up and test the load by tipping it to one side to see if it can be moved comfortably.

  • Is the object is too heavy, too large, or awkward to lift by yourself? If so, use equipment like a forklift, a cart, or a dolly to move the object. Ask for help when needed.

  • Lift with your legs, not your back.

  • Move your feet by pivoting, don't twist.

  • Keep the item you are carrying close to your body, inside the width of your shoulders, and at waist height.

  • Know the path you are going to take. Are there any hazards along the way?

  • Don't be afraid or too proud to ask for help.

  • It is safer to push than to pull.

  • Strain injuries from lifting, pushing, or pulling are the most common injury type here at Freeman.

  • Handle flat screens with care. Be aware of belt buckles, zippers, jewelry or buttons, as they may scratch surfaces.

  • Be conscious of theft when moving and setting large or valuable items. Stage and set gear only when and where requested. Full cases should be in a secured area at all times. Be sure cages are left locked.

  • Remember: If you see something, say something.

Wrap up

It is the responsibility of all employees to be familiar with safety procedures and adhere to all safety practices designed to prevent accidents and injuries.
