Personal protective equipment

Opener

We continuously strive to provide an environment free from all harm by promoting a positive safety culture, which puts our employees and customers at the center of everything we do.

Key points

In the hierarchy of controls to keep workers safe or protected, PPE is the most common.

Know when PPE is required versus optional. If you are not sure, partner with a safety field operations team member to conduct a job hazard analysis (JHA) or job safety analysis (JSA).

The following is a list of different types of PPE and the areas they protect:

  • Eye and Face Protection: Safety glasses, goggles, and shields are used when working around flying particulates or liquids.

  • Hand Protection: Gloves to protect from cuts, scrapes, splinters, pinching, chemicals, and extreme heat or cold.

  • Foot Protection: Wear shoes that will protect from crushing, chemicals, energy or electricity, and extreme heat or cold.

  • Head Protection: Hard hats and bump caps to protect from overhead hazards. These must be worn within the fall zone (a five foot radius from where overhead work is taking place).

  • Respiratory Protection: Dust masks, N95's, full and half face respirators to protect from exposure to chemicals, particulates, or air quality environment issues.

  • Hearing Protection: To protect from loud noises, louder than 85 dbs, specifically for exposure over a long period of time.

  • Fall Protection: Railing systems, full body harnesses, and lanyards.

  • High Visibility Clothing: Make sure the work can be seen by others.

Remember: If you see something, say something.

Wrap up

It is the responsibility of all employees to be familiar with safety procedures and adhere to all safety practices designed to prevent accidents and injuries.
